Using only one font throughout your resume would result in a pretty boring resume design. There are thousands of beautiful and free or low cost fonts available online. So, there’s no excuse to stick to the same old boring fonts everyone else is using. Consider using one font for creative resume headings and one font for your body text. You can also experiment with different font weights.
If you’re applying to a job in a traditional industry, like law, accounting, or real estate, consider using no color on your resume, or use a professional resume color like dark blue or green. If you’re applying to a job in a more modern industry like graphic design, marketing, or fashion, you can safely choose from a more creative color palette, but don’t overload your resume with several different colors. Use one or two complementary colors for headers or borders. Your body text should be black.
Hardworking, self-motivated, self-sufficient, proactive and detail-oriented are all words you’ll find on most people’s resumes. But most job seekers are motivated and hardworking, so these traits don’t really set you apart from the rest of the applicant pool. Instead, focus on the specific skills and accomplishments that make you different from everyone else applying to the position.
Not all hobbies deserve a place on your resume, but some do. Hobbies that highlight positive personality qualities or skills that could benefit you on the job are worth including. For example, running marathons (shows discipline and determination) and blogging about something related to your field (shows creativity and genuine interest in your work) are hobbies that will cast you in the best possible light and might pique a recruiter’s interest.
Choose three or four former positions or experiences that best highlight the skills required for the position you are applying for. Employers value brevity; this is not the time to list every position you have ever held. For example, if you are applying for a marketing position, you could include your former retail experience and bullet the communication, branding, and interpersonal skills you learned in that position.
Are you struggling with writing the perfect resume? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone. According to a recent TopResume study, only 24 percent of professionals described themselves as “confident in their resume-writing ability.” This means that 76 percent of professionals are insecure about their resume and resume-writing skills as a whole.
