If you’ve been eyeing up a designer role at that ultra-creative start-up, you’re going to need to show your employer that you can think outside of the box. Most start-ups have a tech-forward ethos. This creates the perfect opportunity for you to show off your web design skills.
Since you’ll want to be swapping different information in and out depending on the job you’re applying to, keep a resume outline or master resume on your computer where you keep any information you’ve ever included on a resume: old positions, bullet points tailored for different applications, special projects that only sometimes make sense to include. Then, when you’re crafting each resume, it’s just a matter of cutting and pasting relevant information together. Think of this as your brag file.
Your resume is the most important document you’ll submit in your job search. It’s your front-line fighter, so to speak, as it’s your first opportunity to present yourself to a potential employer. A strong resume can help you stand out from the crowd, but a weak resume can remove you from the running, so you want to do all you can to make sure your resume is the best it can be. It can be difficult to succinctly present all of your experiences and qualifications, but there are many ways to spruce up your resume without going overboard.
Have you been actively volunteering with a non-profit organization? Skills-based volunteering (SBV) is a great way to fill an employment gap or supplement your work history when you’re trying to change careers. Please list any volunteer work you’ve done that’s relevant to your current job goals in chronological order, beginning with your most recent work. If you’re new to the workforce, include any campus activities or clubs in which you were active.
Another strategy, and one that’s the complete opposite to Tip 9 above, is to have your resume match the brand of the company you’re applying to. This may seem counter-intuitive but by applying the company’s fonts, colors, style, etc. to your own resume. It shows you did your research and are passionate about the company and about working for it. This is how to design a resume that stands apart from the competition. It’s the kind of creative, out of the box thinking that’ll get you noticed.
Structuring the content of your resume, developing a personal brand, or moving your resume onto a digital platform will prove to potential employers that you can problem-solve, and present information in a memorable, skillful way. Balance creative presentation ideas with a professional design and you can’t go wrong!
